Fire fighters were called to Artisan Crescent in St Albans at 1.31am this morning (Wednesday May 25)

A semi-detached property was alight, with the fire on the ground floor, first floor and spreading to the roof. The residents had already left the property.

Two engines from St Albans, Redbourn, Hemel Hempstead, Watford and Welwyn Garden City attended. The aerial platform was also used.

The fire started to spread to a neighbouring property, so surrounding homes were evacuated.

The fire was out at 3.12am and crews remained on the scene damping down until 8.30am.

A full investigation into the cause will be carried out, although initial indications are that the fire started accidentally.
