Crash Moped Stolen In Hatfield

2 March 2015, 10:17

Police are trying to find a stolen moped in Hatfield.

At around 4.10am on Wednesday February 18, a 16 year old boy was riding his black Piaggio moped in Bishops Rise towards Hatfield town centre when it was in a collision with a car near to the junction of Peregrine Way. The rider fell off the bike and received cuts and bruises and the moped was substantially damaged.

The car, which was a Volkswagen, and possibly a grey Golf, did not stop at the scene.

The moped was left at the scene of the collision so it could be recovered later in the day but between 9.30am and 1.30pm on the same day (February 18), the bike was stolen.

Detective Constable Geoff Smith is investigating the incidents and said: "Thankfully the rider of the moped was not more seriously injured and did not require hospital treatment.

"There are two parts of my investigation that the public may be able to assist me with. Firstly, I'd like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, believes they know the identity of the driver who didn't stop or has recently seen a Volkswagen in the area with damage to the front of the vehicle.

"Secondly, I'd ask anyone who remembers seeing someone taking the moped away on the morning of the incident to contact me. It's possible the person who took the bike was seen by someone who may have thought it was being legitimately taken. Any information about these incidents could assist my investigation."

Anyone with any information in relation to either of these incidents should contact DC Smith via Hertfordshire Constabulary's non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference B2/15/624.
