A court's heard how a son stole his mum's jewellery, worth around 20-thousand pounds and pawned it.

A son who stole his mother's sentimental gold jewellery, worth up to £20,000, has avoided going straight to jail.

A court heard how Jason Sheriff stole the items from his mum's home in Borehamwood and pawned them at a jewellery shop.

He got just under £4000 and used the money to buy drink and go clubbing.

The 22-year-old now of the Toby Carvery, High Road, Barnet, pleaded guilty to theft.

He was given a 12 months jail sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered to complete 150 hours' unpaid work.

He must also pay his mother £4,000 compensation at the rate of £250 a month as well as £300 costs

Defence barrister Rebecca Filletti said: "He apologises for being lazy and self-centred. He is apologising to his mother and is trying to repay her from his wages.

"She is not willing to have him back yet, but might have him home over Christmas."
