Overrunning roadworks and a problem with the safety system in one of the tunnels at the Dartford Crossing have led to long delays for drivers.
At one point queues stretched back 13 miles on the approach to the crossing because of the closure of the East Bore.
The tunnel stayed closed through the morning rush hour and was reopened just after 9am after engineers managed to fix the issue.
Surrounding routes were also badly affected and the situation was not helped by at least one accident
