The council's signed a deal with the Reef Group, releasing funds for a boutique cinema and restaurants at St George's shopping centre - plus improvements to the Eastern and Western Quarters.

Under the arrangement the council has entered into a head lease arrangement with Aviva Investors to provide the funding for the works to take place.

Cllr David Turner, Leader of Gravesham Council, said: "This is a major step in the regeneration of Gravesend town centre and for Gravesham as a whole.

"By working with Reef Group, we will stabilise and invigorate the retail environment of the St George's Shopping Centre by introducing a leisure offer and improve the centre's signage and branding, walkways and general environment.

"By modernising and improving the overall look of the centre and developing a specific leisure area with a boutique cinema and a small number of restaurants, we will be creating a new shopping and leisure experience in Gravesend."

Cllr John Burden, Leader of the Labour Group and Chair of the council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: "I am pleased to see this major deal being signed which will bring significant investment and change to Gravesend town centre.

"It will revitalise the town centre and opens the door to further opportunities."

Stewart Deering, Chief Executive of Reef Group, said: "Reef are exceptionally excited about this strategic joint venture which will enhance Gravesend town centre through the repositioning of St George's Shopping Centre and exciting mixed use development of the Heritage Quarter that will enhance vitality and viability of this important town centre.

"We are excited about working with this ambitious council."
