Police have launched a murder hunt after a man was fatally stabbed yards from Crystal Palace football ground in south London.

The victim, in his 30s or 40s, was attacked near the club's Selhurst Park stadium at about 8.20pm on Sunday.

He staggered into a convenience store in Whitehorse Lane where a member of staff immediately called 999.

Paramedics rushed to the scene but the man was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later.

The stabbing took place a few hours after Crystal Palace's FA Cup fifth round game against Aston Villa.

A police spokesman said they were not aware of any link to the match, although they were keeping an "open mind".

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said there was no significant trouble between fans during the game, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Championship club Palace was recently deducted 10 points after being placed in administration and face a battle to avoid relegation.
