A criminal who failed to return an open prison has been detained after handing himself in at a police station in London.

Leon Brown, who was serving a six-and-a-half year sentence for firearms offences at Hollesley Bay in Suffolk, had been given leave to go to an address in South Ockendon, Essex, on Monday and was due to return by 3.30pm yesterday.

Suffolk Police said the 34-year-old failed to show up and was reported as missing.

Early this morning Suffolk police confirmed they had been informed by the Metropolitan police that Brown presented himself at a station in north London and had been detained.
