Penguin Beach at ZSL London Zoo

A whole fish in one gulp? Not a problem for these zoo favourites.

At ZSL London Zoo there's both black-footed and rockhopper penguins, who form a great little community at the heart of the Zoo.

If you want to catch up with them at their finest, plus find out a little bit more about the care and attention that they receive from their experienced keepers, make sure you get yourselves down to the penguin pool for feeding times!

You'll also be able to meet a member of the keeping team and “Ask the Explainer".

The Heart Penguin

Heart PenguinThis penguin chick is yet to be named but it’s already a bit of a show off.

The youngster who is only five weeks old will be living in the Zoo’s new Penguin Beach nursery area.

He/or she is only three inches high and is currently being hand reared by keepers.

The chick is yet to go swimming but keepers hope that in the next few weeks the eager youngster will be able to go into the Penguin Beach nursery pool.

It takes around 10 weeks to DNA test the sex of a baby penguin so this penguin really needs a name which can be male or female!

The youngster will be kept in the Penguin Beach nursery until he or she is moved to the Zoo’s brand new Penguin Beach pool.

Holding more than 450,000 litres of water the Zoo’s new pool will be four times bigger and three times deeper than the existing penguin pool, and opens to the public on Friday 27th May.
