Smokers Stubbed Out In Stony Stratford?

Smokers could soon be completely banned from lighting up in public.

Next week, town councillors in Stony Stratford will vote on the proposals from Councillor Paul Bartlett, an anti-smoking campaigner.

He says, "You don't go around spitting in the street, you even put your hand over your mouth when you yawn or sneeze. Not to do so is seen as bad behavior.  And I think smoking in the public highway should be seen as totally unacceptable."

If his plans are given the go-ahead, it would make the town the first in the UK to have a complete blanket ban on smoking in public.

And if the laws are flouted, smokers would face a £50-80 fine.

It's not the first time Councillor Bartlett has tried to get people in and around Milton Keynes to stub out the ciggies; he was behind the smoking ban in Milton Keynes Shopping Centre 15 years ago.

The vote will take place on Tuesday 19th.
