After the pair completed their incredible journey in a tiny rowing boat however, the ex-Bristol University student had one more hurdle to cross.

On arriving in Port St. Charles in Barbados the brave boatsman was greeted by his girlfriend of six years, Lucy Plant: "We could barely walk when we got out of the boat," Mr Martin-Dreyer said "Lucy thought I had just fallen over to start with. It took her a while to work out what I was doing."

Luckily the surprised Miss Plant accepted the proposal and the happy couple are now engaged.
