8. Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon and the Duke of York
Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon as she was formerly known, married the Duke of York on 26 April 1923 at Westminster Abbey. The pair later became Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and King George VI. Although traditionally Princes were supposed to marry Princes and vice versa, the Duke of York fell in love with Elizabeth, the daughter of a peer and was permitted to marry her by his mother. The Duke proposed three times before she eventually accepted, as she had misgivings about royal life.
