NASA Are recruiting a planetary protection officer

By Alice Westoby

The space agency is hiring a planetary protection officer to keep Earth safe.

When NASA put up their recent job ad we weren't quite sure whether it was legit of the stuff of science fiction.

The famous space agency are currently on the look out for a Planetary Protection Officer and it turns out it truly is as sci-fi as it sounds.

According to the job ad on the NASA website the role will be "concerned with the avoidance of organic-constituent and biological contamination in human and robotic space exploration."

Despite sounding like something the Men In Black should be responsible for the role has instead been described as a sort of like a zookeeper for the solar system.

The successful applicant will be tasked with safeguarding the space outside our own atmosphere from contamination by us humans potentially caused by space exploration.

On the flip side, the Planetary Protection Officer will be on the look out for any contamination from outside our atmosphere looking to infiltrate our planet. In short, keeping aliens out!

It's news to us, but apparently this role is not uncommon and space agencies all over the globe have their own versions of Planetary Protection Officers.

However normally this role is part time and the only full time Planetary Protection Officers belong to the European Space Agency and of course NASA.

It certainly sounds like a full time job to us!

If you think you have what it takes head to the NASA website here and try your luck at being a real life galaxy defender.
