What are the motorways and trains to avoid this Christmas period? All the roads predicted to be busy, congested and full of traffic.

Motorists across Britain are facing huge traffic jams as families begin making their journeys across the country for Christmas.

The RAC and traffic information company Inrix may released a breakdown of the roads that will be busy this Christmas as they predict upwards of 6 million people could be on the roads on Boxing Day.

They have advised that the worst days on which to travel are Thursday and Friday (20th and 21st December), as this is when people most commonly drive home for Christmas and take to the road shop for presents.

They estimate that 2.5 million journeys will be made by car on Thursday, 2.8 million on Friday and a further 6.8 million are expected to make the journey home on Boxing Day.

Most roadworks on England motorways will be lifted or finished by 06:00 GMT on Friday (21 December), but some will be kept in place for safety reasons.

On the railway, strike action by South Western Railways and Northern Rail workers will affect major London stations including Victoria and Paddington.

Meanwhile, hundreds of engineering works will affect major stations including London Victoria and Paddington.
