A body recovered from the Humber Estuary near Grimsby Docks has been confirmed to be a woman.

Formal identification is yet to place and police are unable to confirm the identity of the victim.

A post-mortem is under way and is expected to continue into this evening.

Police said in a statement: "We have been in contact and informed those that needed to be aware of the recovery."

Officers were called to the Humber Estuary just before 3pm on Wednesday and a lifeboat was seen moored nearby.

A body was reportedly spotted close to the ferry terminal in Hull last month, but extensive searches carried out by police and the Coastguard did not find anything.

Police are still searching for missing Libby Squire, 21, who disappeared after a night out in Hull more than six weeks ago.

The University of Hull philosophy student was last seen on Beverley Road in the city at around 12.05am on Friday 1 February.

Officers admitted last month that Libby "may have come to harm" and urged anyone with information to come forward.
