An international award has been given to eight of our beaches in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Keep Britain Tidy hands out Blue Flags every year to beaches that are clean, have great facilities and are safe. Beaches in Mundelsey, Sheringham, Cromer, Sea Palling, Southwold and two in Lowestoft have made the list this year.

Keep Britain Tidy's, Fiona Ashurst,  said 'Blue Flag is the international award scheme that guarantees tourists that the beach is one of the best in the world. It is given to coastal destinations that have achieved the highest standards in water quality, they've got great facilities and good levels of safety.

'It is the Oscar nominations for beaches. It's great news for the beaches and the towns that they operate in.'

Phil Barton Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy said 'the continuing high standards of these beaches are a testament to the hard work carried out by the beach managers throughout the year in order to provide clean and safe beaches for everyone to enjoy, whether you live on the coast or are a visitor to the area.

'Traditional beach holidays in this country were always centred on our seaside resorts and we urge holiday-makers to rekindle their passion for the wonderful coastline and resorts throughout Suffolk and Norfolk'
