Northamptonshire Police have been searching after firearms officers lost a box of bullets that had been left on the roof of a police car.
They're urging people who find bullets not to touch them, but to contact Northamptonshire Police on the non-emergency number 101.
Firearms officers had been responding to an emergency call close to the A43 roundabout just south of Junction 15A of the M1.
During their response on Monday 17 December 2012, a box containing bullets which had been left on the roof of their police car fell into the road. The box was later found but five bullets remained unaccounted for.
A thorough search of the area, which includes use of specially trained dogs, has taken place. Police say it's possible the remaining few bullets could have been carried a distance in the tyres of large vehicles.
Northamptonshire Police say their priority is the safety of members of the public.
They also say they take the security surrounding armed police and their equipment extremely seriously and the incident will be thoroughly investigated. Northants Police have voluntarily informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
