James Wharton, 25, was the first soldier in the Household Cavalry to go through a civil partnership.
James, who is originally from Wrexham, now tours secondary schools with gay rights charity Stonewall to tell children about his life in the forces.
It was through this that he was asked by an artist to pose for a painting.
The painting called 'Untitled' has now been bought by Sir Elton John for his personal collection.
