Tributes are being paid to a Cheshire back packer who died trying to save another traveller in a stab attack.

Tom Jackson, 30, from Congleton has been hailed a hero after he tried to protect Mia Ayliffe-Chung, when she was attacked and killed in Queensland last Tuesday.

Tom passed away nearly a week later from his injuries, his Dad Les Jackson says: "We are bereft. Our darling Tom has left us and the world is a poorer place. Thanks again to everyone for the love and support you have given us over the last few days, we will be forever grateful. There is dark and evil in this world perpetrated by a few, but so much more love and light emanates from so many more. That thought will sustain us over the coming days."

Heart has spoken to friend and fellow backpacker Emily Jayne Waters from Port Talbot, she spent time with Tom when she first arrived in Australia.

fundraising page has been set up for Tom Jackson's family.
