Wirral Honours Fallen Heroes

People gathered in Birkenhead on Hamilton Square to witness the unveiling of a new memorial to pay tribute to the area's war dead.

In  the crowd was the family of Trooper Phillip Lawrence from Birkenhead. He was killed back in 2009 when the vehicle he was travelling in was caught up in an explsion.

HIs brother Christopher told Heart News it was an emotional but important day to mark. Phillip's Gran Jean revealed the dad of one was the "Joker of the family" who was full of life.

A final phase of the memorial will be opened next year. It'll remember those killed in the First World War, The Boer War and the Merchant Navy. Alongside a plaque for those killed in Wirral during air raids.
