A Peterborough mother has been jailed for causing or allowing the death of her five year old son.

Tyler Whelan [pictured - below] was murdered at his home in Peterborough on the 7th March last year.

His mother, 27 year old Stephanie Whelan [pictured - above right], then of Sheepwalk in Paston, Peterborough, was found guilty of causing or allowing his death by not doing enough to prevent it.

Following a three week trial at Cambridge Crown Court in May, Whelan was today (Thursday) jailed for four years at Reading Crown Court.

Whelan denied causing or allowing Tyler's death, however a jury found her guilty after almost 11 hours of deliberations.

Whelan's partner, 34 year old Elvis Lee of Crabtree, Paston, Peterborough, has already started serving a life sentence in prison after being found guilty of murdering Tyler.

Superintendent Simon Megicks said: "Whelan has been found to have allowed his death following these fatal injuries.

Tyler deserved more from his mother.

It is our responsibility to ensure that offenders are identified and effectively brought to justice and I am pleased this has happened in this case."
