Traditional lifeboat launch - Saturday 28 January at 9am, Torbay
The RNLI volunteers at Torbay will recreate a traditional lifeboat launch using the ancient rowing lifeboat from Whitby which dates back to 1866. They'll launch at the site of the former Torbay lifeboat station at Mud Stone in St Mary's Bay, then row 8 miles across the bay to Brixham Harbour, on to Paignton Pier, then Beacon Cove before finishing at the now disused lifeboat station in Torquay. Wives and partners of the lifeboat crew will help with the launch, as they would have in the 1800s. They'll then take on their own challenge, to tow a present day D class lifeboat 10 miles from the current lifeboat station in Brixham through Paignton and Torquay town centre and on to the old lifeboat station in Torquay to meet up with the lifeboat crew.
