A 21-year-old man has died after his car hit a concrete barrier on a motorway.

The accident happened at about 7.50pm on Thursday in Moodiesburn, North Lanarkshire.

Police Scotland said the man was driving his Vauxhall Corsa northbound on the M80 near junction four when it appeared to lose control and then hit the central concrete barrier.

Emergency services attended the scene and the 21-year-old was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, but he died a short time later.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Inspector Darren Faulds said: "Whilst officers have spoken to a number of people who stopped to assist the man after the crash, we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the car on the M80 prior to the incident, or who may have information that will assist our inquiries."

Police have appealed for witnesses to call 101.
