Fire Rips Through Airdrie School

A primary school in Airdrie has been completely destroyed by fire.

Crews were called to the scene at around 3.55pm yesterday and found the roof of St Dominic's primary school on fire.

The blaze broke out after lessons had ended for the day, although after-school clubs were being held and some nursery children were still there.

Everyone was evacuated before fire crews arrived and nobody was hurt.

North Lanarkshire Council says demolition work will start on the building later today.

All of the school's 128 pupils are at home today as the authority works on alternative plans for next week. Schools in North Lanarkshire are due to break up for the Easter holidays on Thursday.
