A motorist was struck and killed while carrying out car repairs on the motorway hard shoulder.
The 60-year-old was tending to a wheel of his stationary Fiat Punto when he was hit by a van on the M74 between Larkhall and Hamilton in Lanarkshire.
Police are appealing for witnesses following the crash north of junction 7 at around 6.20am.
The 57-year-old driver of the white Mercedes Sprinter van was not injured.
Sergeant Craig McDonald said: "Road policing officers are continuing inquiries and seek the assistance of the public to determine what exactly took place. If you have any information or witnessed this incident, we ask that you get in contact with the road policing unit at Motherwell on 101.''
