A man has been taken to hospital after being hit by a taxi in Edinburgh city centre.

Emergency services were called to the scene in North Castle Street at around 1pm on Tuesday, police said.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to a report that a taxi had crashed into a building and sent two appliances to the incident.

Firefighters were using hydraulic cutting equipment to free two people trapped in the vehicle.

SFRS said the pedestrian was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh while paramedics were at the scene to assess the people in the taxi.

North Castle Street was closed between Queen Street and George Street while emergency services dealt with the incident.
