The 50-year-old man is understood to have been walking on the northbound carriageway of the A90, near Cramond in Edinburgh, at around 3:15am today when he was hit by a blue Volkswagen Touran, police said.
He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he remains in a serious condition.
Enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the collision are ongoing and police are appealing for information.
Sergeant Roger Park, of the Police Scotland Trunk Road Patrol Group, said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity at the time and who believes that they may have witnessed the incident or indeed have any relevant information to contact the police on 101.''
