A man is in hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a car which mounted the pavement outside a bank.

The 72-year-old was walking along the High Street in Dalkeith when the blue Vauxhall Corsa struck him at around 2.30pm on Tuesday.

Police said the car is believed to have mounted the pavement accidentally.

The pedestrian was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious injuries.

Officers are appealing for information about the incident in the Midlothian town.

Sergeant Fraser Wood said: "Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this collision, however, we do believe the car mounted the pavement accidentally.

"I would appeal to anyone who was driving or walking in the High Street area of Dalkeith on Tuesday afternoon and who witnessed what happened, to contact police as soon as possible.

"Anyone with any information to assist this investigation is asked to come forward as soon as possible."

The driver of the Corsa was not injured.

The road was closed for around three hours for collision investigation and local diversions were put in place.
