But there's a chin-stroking twist to this tale...

Well, what a week it’s been! Comedian Alan Carr hasn’t been a regular fixture on our screens since his Channel 4 chat show Alan Carr: Chatty Man ended last Christmas.

But the camp comic sent his fans into a frenzy yesterday when he shared a photo of his new look. Gone was the clean-cut smiling face we all know and love, and in its place was a moody beard-sporting pout.

I think being a hipster suits me

“I think being a hipster suits me,” said Alan, 41, and fans soon took to his Instagram comments box to offer their verdict on the new look. One echoed his words, saying: “I think being a hipster suits you,” while another disagreed, ordering him to: “Trim the beard or get rid Alan!” Well, that’s him told.

Another fan thought he could give booming-voiced thespian Brian Blessed a run for his money.

So what’s the real story with Alan Carr’s facial fur? Has he turned his back on showbiz to open a food truck/tattoo parlour in London’s Shoreditch? Well, not exactly.

The big clue is that his beardy photo was posted from The London Studios, which indicates that he was there for some filming and was really in costume.

On Sunday, the comedian was photographed looking completely clean-shaven. So fans who hate the fuzz can now breathe easy.

Alan was pictured alongside actress Keira Knightley, 32, and glamazon Liz Hurley, 52. The celebrities were taking part in the 13th Annual Charity Day, held in London’s Canary Wharf.

The event is held each year in London and New York to raise money for a variety of charities and to commemorate the 658 workers from financial company Cantor Fitzgerald who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11.

Other stars who took to the phones this year included Cheryl; Mary Berry; The Countess of Wessex; Sarah Ferguson; Danny Cipriani; Davina McCall; Frankie and Wayne Bridge and Ellie Simmonds.
