You Might Be Shocked To Hear How Much Coffee The 'Friends' Characters Drank

Gunther must have been making a fortune at Central Perk!
Could they DRINK any more coffee? The Friends characters famously spent a lot of time hanging out at Central Perk, the coffee shop where they exchanged quips, nursed break-ups and – in Rachel’s case – mostly got your order wrong.
But exactly how many cups did the gang get through? It’s a question no-one was asking, but one that Twitter user Kit Lovelace took it upon himself to answer. The industrious social media ace went through all 236 episodes with a fine stirrer and found that Joey, Phoebe, Monica, Chandler, Ross and Rachel slurped their way through a whopping 1,154 coffees during the sitcom’s 10 series.
Digging through old stuff, just found my results from the time I went through all 236 episodes of Friends to see how much coffee they drank. pic.twitter.com/4Kg7QO0mA6— Kit Lovelace (@kitlovelace) June 27, 2017
Kit broke the results down into a colourful graph. It turns out that Phoebe drank the most coffee – which perhaps explains her highly strung nature – while Rachel, who of course worked at Central Perk, drank the least. No wonder she could never what had been ordered!
Eagled-eyed Kit told The Huffing Post: “If they were somewhere were there was no coffee (Ross giving a lecture; Monica catering an event etc), I would fast forward through the scene keeping an eye out for any potential mugs or cups. Any Central Perk scene, or apartment scene where they were eating and drinking I watched [properly].”
The investigative tweeter even worked out how much the Friends spent on coffee between 1994 and 2004 (the years during which the show was first on air). On the understanding that they each tipped 20% – a figure that he sourced through a conversation between Joey and Chandler in the episode ‘The One With Unagi’ – he concluded that they splashed out a grand total of $2,022.20 on their favourite drink.
It's not unreasonable to assume therefore that a coffee is ~$1.50. That being so, including tips, I also worked out how much they spent... pic.twitter.com/2G9xSbqv7c— Kit Lovelace (@kitlovelace) June 27, 2017
So now you know! Is Kit Lovelace a man with too much time on his hands? Possibly, but at least now you’re armed with the answer if you happen to attend the hardest pub quiz of all time.
Hey! Remember that time Gunther from Friends dropped into the Heart studio?
