Bus Route Used As 'Racetrack'

Seems some people are using the new bus rapid transit route between Gosport and Fareham as a racetrack.

People living nearby have complained about mopeds racing there at night.

The route does have automatic barriers designed to stop people from accessing the track. Hampshire County Council is now investigating whether there is a fault with the barriers.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment and Transport at Hampshire County Council, said: "Residents acted correctly in contacting the Police. Mopeds are not permitted on the Eclipse dedicated busway and the Police are following up the incident, which may well result in a prosecution.

"We are supporting their enquiries with the provision of images captured on the CCTV that is linked to the barriers. The CCTV is monitored by staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the Police have full access to this.

"The barriers are designed to be weighted so that they cannot be lifted by hand and the controls can only be overridden by an authorised operative. We are investigating the possibility therefore, that there may have been a fault and if this is found to be the case we will ensure it is repaired as soon as possible."
