Driver Faces Court For Speeding

A driver's facing court after being zapped by a mobile speed camera doing 130 miles an hour near Chichester.

The BMW M3 was caught on Saturday, 2 July near Fontwell, clocking the highest speed recorded in the county this year, according to Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP).

The safety partnership is reminding motorists to abide by the speed limits across the county or risk prosecution for their behaviour.

Unacceptable speed blights communities and despite years of local and national campaigning, there are still some motorists who wilfully choose to exceed the speed limits, it said.

On that same day the BMW driver was caught, six motorcyclists were detected speeding and overtaking within six seconds in heavy traffic through Coldwaltham on the A29. Phil Henty, Operations Manager at the SSRP, said:

“This sort of wilful disregard for the speed limit is completely unacceptable.  Speed limits are set to protect communities and road users alike, and we expect motorists to abide by them.

“To see speeds of this magnitude on our roads is extremely disappointing since it put all road users in danger.

“Our mobile safety camera teams will be out on the roads throughout the summer, enforcing the speed limits and reminding motorists about the dangers posed by excessive speeds."

Pieter Montyn, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:

"I welcome the use of the mobile safety cameras as another timely reminder of the need to obey the speed limits that are in force."
