Major Parking Changes Proposed For Southampton

There could be major changes to parking for people living in the centre of Southampton.

They're consulting on proposals to introduce resident only parking permits for use within the city centre on-street pay and display zones.

The consultation is now open and will run for six weeks, until Monday 13 May.

The aim is to help the council to understand the demand for and attitudes towards using some existing on-street pay and display parking spaces as shared residents’ parking spaces for people living in the city centre. They're also looking for comments on the extent of the reach of any new scheme, the cost of residential spaces and areas that should be exclude within the city centre.

People can view and complete the consultation at Gateway in West Marlands Road and at the Central Library, Civic Centre, as well as online.

Councillor Asa Thorpe, Southampton City Council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said:

“It’s important that people have their say and let us know what they think of these proposals. City centre parking will always be at a premium so we need to look at options to make sure there is enough provision for people who live in the city and that whatever is in place also works for businesses and visitors. We hope that people will see these proposals as a positive idea - the feedback from the consultation will let us know if we’re on the right track or if we need to look at it again.”
