Operation Checkpoint Targets Taxi Thieves

A special operation's starting in Portsmouth with police laying out traps to try catch theives breaking into taxis.

Officers tell Capital there have been almost 80 thefts from cars just in the city centre so far this year - 12 of those have been taxis.

A bag of cash and a sat nav is now being left on display in a car used by police to try catch criminals in the act, as part of Operation Checkpoint.

Police say they have seen an increase in cabs being targeted for their cash bags. 

Drivers are now urged to ensure they remove all valuables from their vehicles to avoid becoming victims.
