Police in Southampton are looking for witnesses to an arson that happened in Tangmere Drive, Lordshill on Sunday, June 6.

Between 2am and 3.10am someone has set light to the letterbox on the front door of a property in the road owned by a 65-year-old man.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue attended and put the fire out before it could extend past the front door.

The occupants of the house were awoken by the smoke alarm and were evacuated from the property by the fire service. No-one was injured.

Detective Constable David Thomas said: “It is very fortunate that no-one was hurt in this incident and the situation could have been far more serious if the fire had been given time to spread. “We want to track down the person responsible as quickly as possible to prevent any further incidents. “This is the second time this letterbox has been set alight – the first time being between midnight and 10am on Tuesday, June 1.”

Anyone who saw the letterbox being set alight, saw anyone acting suspiciously, or has any information about who is responsible should contact Shirley police station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
