Police Seek 'Bamboo' Burglars

18 October 2011, 13:20

Police are appealing for information following two attempted burglaries in Portsmouth.

At around 11.45pm on Friday, October 14 the occupants at an address near the junction of New Road and New Road East, Portsmouth, went to bed.  When they went downstairs the following morning they noticed a bamboo cane sticking through the letter box of the front door.

No one managed to break in but it's thought the offenders were trying to use the bamboo cane to reach a set of keys which were close to the door.

The next door house also had a bamboo cane sticking out of the letter box.

PC Sabrina West, said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area of New Road and New Road East overnight between Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15, to come forward.

“We particularly want to hear from anyone who saw anyone carrying bamboo canes in the area.

“We are advising householders to keep their house keys and car keys away from the hall area adjacent to the front door or anywhere else where they could be reached from outside.  Do not hang keys on hooks near to the door and make sure you remove keys from the lock so that cannot be reached through the letter box."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC West at Cosham Police Station on 101 or via the website www.hampshire.police.uk/internet/contact/message_officer.htm

You can also call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
