Police have confirmed a body found in the Solent on Sunday was missing kayaker Stephen Taylor.
The 54-year-old from Newbroke Road in Gosport left Lee-on-Solent at around 11.30am on Saturday, April 18 in his blue coloured kayak with the intention of paddling to Lepe beach in the Southampton area.
Mr Taylor, who was an experienced canoeist, was in touch with his partner throughout the day but when he had failed to return home late in the evening she alerted police.
His body was found on Sunday, near the Isle of Wight.
Today Hampshire Police released the following statement:
'We are now in a position to release the name of the man who's body was found in the Solent, close to the Isle of Wight.
'He is Stephen Taylor, aged 54 from Newbroke Road, Gosport.
'His family has today released a short statement:
'They said: "The family would like to thank all the emergency services, including volunteer search agencies and the RNLI lifeboats for their efforts in trying to find Stephen.
'The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.'
