A teenager’s been rescued from a cliff ledge on the Isle of Wight after falling 30ft trying to find her cat.

The 18-year-old was recovered from the cliff at Atherfield Point, after falling while attempting to reach her pet.

Ventnor and Needles coastguard rescue teams were scrambled after Solent Coastguard was alerted by a 999 call just before 7pm last night (Wednesday 23rd March).

Rescue officers and a paramedic were lowered to reach the teenager and provide medical help.

She was then pulled back up the cliff on a stretcher and taken to hospital. The cat was also recovered safe and well, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.

Deputy watch manager Matthew West advised against members of the public attempting pet rescues on cliffs.

He said: “This woman was incredibly lucky to be rescued with relatively minor injuries.

“We know it's worrying when pets go missing but cliffs are dangerous places, particularly in the dark.”
