Two Dogs Die In House Fire

Two dogs have died in a house fire in West Wellow.

It broke out at around 3.30 on Friday afternoon (November 5th) at a mid-terrace house in Gurnays Mead. More than 30 firefighters spent the night battling the flames, which spread to the roof and affected the two houses next door - the fire was finally extinguished at 8.30am on Saturday.

Incident commander, Southampton Group Manager Tom Carr, said on Friday:

“This is a fire which started in a mid terraced property. The property has a lot of material inside and as a result we are still tackling an active fire.

“Due to the intensity of this fire the stairwell has collapsed as well as parts of the first floor. The result is that we are having to tackle this fire from the outside due to difficult access.”

No-one was injured, but people living in nearby homes were evacuated and some had to spend the night in a community centre.

A fire investigation is being carried out in conjunction with Hampshire police.
