Police have named the elderly woman killed in a collision on the M3 at Fleet services on Tuesday (March 22).

Sigrid Schmitz, 79, died when she was struck by a Volkswagen Passat on the northbound carriageway shortly after 7pm.

Police believe Mrs Schmitz, from Remscheid in Germany, had wandered onto the motorway after becoming separated from the coach party she had been travelling with.

The coach had been heading towards Southampton when it had pulled into the services for a comfort break.

Mrs Schmitz died at the scene.

The driver of the Passat, a 23-year-old man from Old Basing, was uninjured.

The M3 was closed at Fleet services and traffic was diverted through the service station, while collision investigators examined the scene.

The motorway reopened at 12.45am.

Anyone with information, or who saw the woman prior to the collision, is asked to contact Sgt Andy Tester at Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Garrard.

Alternatively, call the Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
