Police are appealing for witnesses after an air rifle was discharged in Ipswich town centre this afternoon, injuring a workman.

Emergency services were called to St Mary le Tower church at 2.23pm where a man working on the church tower had sustained a minor injury to the neck, believed to have been caused by an air pellet. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers including a dog handler, armed response units and the force helicopter carried out a thorough search of the area around the church, but no weapon or offender were located.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious around the church, or anyone with information about any persons with air rifles in the town centre this afternoon should call Suffolk Police on 101.
