Newmarket: Attempted Rape

Police are appealing for information following the attempted rape of a 24-year-old woman in Newmarket.

The incident happened in an alleyway running between the High Street and Rowley Drive around 3.20am this morning, Monday 27 August.

The woman as walking home after a night out when she passed a group of males in the alleyway. A short time later she became aware of someone behind her and as she approached the Arlington Court flats a man approached and tried to engage her in conversation.

Moments later she was knocked to the ground and the man tried to undo her trousers. She struck out at the offender and also managed to 'last number' dial a male friend, via her mobile phone, who then came to her aid and the offender fled.

Police were alerted and officers are currently making enquiries to trace a possible named suspect in connection with the incident.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the incident or anyone with information about the male responsible to call Bury St Edmunds CID on 101.
