Fire Warning

We're being warned the countryside around mid and north Sussex is 'as dry as a tinderbox'.

The warning from the fire service comes in the wake of a spate of fires affecting woodland, fields and gardens over the weekend.

District Commander, Richard Davy has told Heart some were started deliberately; others by careless use of bonfires, cigarettes and barbecues.

He's issued the following advice on avoiding fires:

* Never throw lighted cigarette ends out of the windows of vehicles or trains.

* Clear up and take your rubbish home after a picnic in the countryside.

* Don’t be tempted to light a fire in the countryside and only barbecue in authorised areas.

* Don’t leave glass bottles – not only can they hurt people and animals, they can magnify the sun’s rays and start a fire.
