CCTV of Paignton Knife Robber

Police in Paignton are appealing for information following an attempted robbery in the town.

Paington newsagent scares robber

A knife-wielding robber fled from a convenience store in Devon empty-handed after the 68-year-old owner brandished a screwdriver at him and told him "use the knife or **** off'', it was revealed on Monday.

Brian Hammond was confronted by a hood-wearing man with a six-inch "butcher-style'' knife who had entered his newsagents and demanded all the money from the till.

But the robber got more than he bargained for when the feisty owner picked up the DIY tool and faced him down.

Mr Hammond, who has run The News Shop in Fisher Street, Paignton, Devon, for the past 15 years, said he was not prepared to meekly hand over his hard-earned money.

The botched robbery took place on June 13 but Devon and Cornwall Police have just released CCTV footage from the shop in a fresh bid to trace the would-be robber.

Police would like to hear from anyone who recognises the man, or anyone who has any information in relation to this robbery and ask that they contact the police on 08452 777444 quoting police reference FP/11/1704, or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or report online at www.Crimestoppers-uk.org
