Pupils who witnessed one of their classmates being in collision with a car on Tuesday 17 December are being offered welfare support.
The 12-year old girl who is a pupil at Newton Abbot College, was walking from school when the collision happened on Old Exeter Road at around 3:30pm.
She was taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth but was later transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
She is in a critical but stable condition after suffering a head injury.
The car involved was a grey/blue BMW 323i from the Exeter area and was driven by 69-year-old woman.
The driver is not thought to have been injured. The road was closed for an hour while investigators were at the scene.
A police spokesperson said: "Officers are investigating the cause of the collision and have spoken to a number of witnesses already, but if anyone else witnessed this incident please get in touch."
