Torbay Teenage Pregnancy Rates Fall

There's been a dip in the number of teenagers falling pregnant in Torbay.

The latest figures for conceptions in those under 18 show a fall of 15 per cent from 2008 to 2009.

That means 131 teenagers became pregnant in 2009 compared to 159 in the previous year.

It puts the bay's rate at 55.3 per 1000, which is still above the national average.

Associate Director of Public Health Siobhan Grady told Heart there's still a long way to go...

More than half the pregnancies end in abortions which, Siobhan says, means that they're unwanted conceptions.

Tackling teenage pregnancy has been a key priority in Torbay for several years and Siobhan's sure that commitment is the reason for the fall.
