A 55 year old man's being questioned after a crash between a van and a lorry.
It happened on the M6 in Birmingham between junctions 5 and 6 on the southbound carriageway at around 1.15am on Friday morning.
A 54-year-old man who was driving the van has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The man from the HGV has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The carriageway was closed for around seven hours as police investigated but has since reopened.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from Collision Investigation Unit at West Midlands Police, said: "This was a serious collision on a main route into Birmingham.
"Even at that time of the day, we believe there would be a number of vehicles on the road and people who may have witnessed what happened.
"We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area, particularly those who may have dash cam footage, and can assist us in our investigations."
