A man is in a critical condition in hospital and police have made four arrests after what is thought to have been an attempted robbery in West Bromwich.

Officers were called to reports of a man who'd collapsed after being assaulted on Jervoise Lane, Stone Cross, in the early hours of Saturday morning

When they arrived they found a man in his thirties who'd suffered a serious head injury which has left him in a critical condition in hospital.

A second man in his thirties had also been attacked and was taken to hospital but he's now been discharged following treatment.

Four men aged 17, 18, 19 and 20 were detained after the attack and have all been arrested on suspicion of assault.

DC Pete Miller from Force CID in Smethwick is investigating the attack which the police were alerted to at 00.50am.

He said: "The men appear to have been approached while walking home along Jervoise Lane.

"We believe that the offenders may well have been attempting to rob them but ran off without anything.

"The man's injuries are quite serious and he is in hospital in a critical condition at this time.

"We need to hear from anyone who was in the area and may have seen the attack or people running away from the scene."

The men arrested remain in police custody.
