2nd armed robbery in Corsham

Extra police are on the streets of Corsham after two armed robberies in the space of just 3 days.

At around 8:50pm on Thursday 22nd March 2011, a man entered Costcutters on Kings Avenue shortly before the store was due to close. He was seen on CCTV to stop outside the stop and pull a black beanie / balaclava style hat over his face before entering. Once inside the empty store he threatened two members of staff with a knife and demanded they hand over cash. He then left the store with approximately £200 and headed towards Kings Avenue.

The man was described as white, aged 16-20 years, approximately 5’6 – 5’8 tall and of slim build. He was wearing a grey Adidas hooded top with bright florescent green motif and stripes running down the length of the arms. He was also wearing dark Adidas jogging trousers and black Nike trainers.

The incident comes in the same week as an armed robbery at another newsagent in the town. On this occasion a man entered Oakley’s Newsagent in Pickwick Road, Corsham at approximately 8:45pm on Monday, 19th March. Once again the man threatened staff with a knife, demanded they hand over cash and left with money in a bag.

Detective Sergeant Mark Kent said:

"We are still in the early stages of enquiries for lasts nights’ incident but we are satisfied that both are linked. Both the description of the man and the circumstances of the incidents themselves are significantly similar. CSI have attended the scene and enquiries from their examinations are on-going. CCTV is also being reviewed at this time. Once again it is fortunate that no one was injured during this robbery although it was a very frightening experience for those involved and we are continuing to offer them support at this time.
There will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days whilst our enquiries, including house to house, continue. Anyone who does have concerns can approach an officer, contact their NPT or contact ourselves on 101. As part of the ongoing investigations into both incidents we’d like to hear from anyone who may have any information or who may recognise the descriptions of the offenders given."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101. Alternatively people can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously if they wish.
