A man has died after a wall collapsed in St Albans.

Police and health and safety teams have started an investigation following what happened in Mile House Lane on the afternoon of Wednesday 30 January 2013.

A 26 year old man from Welwyn Garden City died at the scene. It's thought a wall may have collapsed on him while he was carrying out building work.

Heart's been to the scene where neighbours say they're shocked by what's happened.

Although they didn't see the wall fall, some said they saw the man's body being taken away while some of his colleagues cried and hugged each other.

Ambulance crews from St Albans, Welwyn Garden City and the Hazardous Area Response Team attended the scene as well as the Herts Air Ambulance.

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: "First and foremost our thoughts are with the man's family at this tragic time."

"Following a rapid scene assessment by our paramedics, the man was pronounced dead shortly after."
