Basildon: Hospital Inspection Over Death Rates

Inspectors will take their first look around Basildon Hospital today as part of the investigation into high death rates.

It is one of 14 hospitals under scrutiny - a group which also Colchester General Hospital.

An experienced team of doctors, nurses and patient representatives will be going there as part of the Keogh Review into mortality rates which was sparked by the Mid-Staffordshire NHS scandal.

The review, was ordered by the Prime Minister, aims to discover if there are any "sustained failings" in the quality of care and treatment being provided.

Chief Executive of Basildon University Hospital, Clare Panniker, said: "We fully support the review. A great deal of work has already taken place and more is underway to ensure we are providing our patients with good and compassionate care.

"This review will look at all areas of patient quality and safety and we are determined to listen, learn and implement any changes we need to."

The findings of the review will be published this summer.
